About the Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance

Since 2012 the Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance has organized the DSOs and suppliers to the energy industry, research institutions etc. We have successfully established an alliance of 70 members covering the entire value chain of contributors to an intelligent energy system in Denmark.

We work to enable integration of increasing amounts of renewables in the Danish energy system, through smart grid and smart integration of energy systems, through an enhanced market framework for a demand response market, activation of buildings in the demand response market etc. We focus on energy-efficiency as well as energy-flexibility, thereby we wish to cease the business opportunities of the intelligent energy system.

The political drivers of an intelligent energy system in Denmark

The Danish government has established the following targets about wind power generation, greenhouse gas emissions etc.:

  • 2020: 50% wind energy in the electricity system
  • 2020: 40% greenhouse gas reduction compared to 1990 level
  • 2030: Phase-out of coal in power generation
  • 2035: 100% Renewable energy in electricity and heating
  • 2050: 100% Renewable energy in all sectors

Wind power is the main renewable source in the Danish energy system. Already in 2014 we saw about 40% wind power generation in the electricity system. In the future, power generation based on wind becomes the base-load. To use the wind power optimally, the Danish energy system has to adapt to this situation and become an intelligent energy system where the demand side can respond and match the intermittent wind resources and at the same time continue to be well connected and integrated into the northern European energy system.

The Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance

The need for closer co-operation between the DSOs and the energy related industry, research institutions, municipalities etc. was the key driver for establishing the Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance, in March 2012, as part of the Danish Energy Association. The Alliance contributed to the Government’s Smart Grid Strategy advocated strongly for the legislative decision on rolling out smart meters in all households by 2020. This legislative decision is obviously at the core of enabling Denmark to develop a demand response market.

Mission

The mission of the Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance: is to establish the Danish platform for key players among DSOs, industry, research institutions, advisors and municipalities which are all essential in order to effectively roll-out an intelligent energy system. From the Alliance’ perspective an intelligent energy system includes everything from a smart grid to the full integration of energy systems (electricity, gas, heating, water and waste).

Since 2012 the Alliance has successfully established the platform with around 70 members covering the entire value chain of contributors to the intelligent energy system.  The Alliance is further influencing the development of other elements, e. g. the market conditions which will enable a demand response market.
